From August 12th - 23rd, 2015 the Welland International Flatwater Centre will be host to two international dragon boat events: Pan American Club Crew Championships (PACCC), and World Dragon Boat Racing Championships (WDBRC). Between these two (2) prestigious international events, Canada will host a total of 5,500 accredited participants from 30+ countries, aged from 18 - 80+ years old. Being the fastest growing team oriented flatwater sport, dragon boating attracts active, sport and fitness-oriented, health conscious, adventurous, youthful people.
Over the course of the 12 days, the 5,500 accredited participants will be coming to the Niagara region for one of these championships; spending money on accommodations, meals, entertainment, attractions, and shopping. The Sport Tourism Economic Assessment Model (STEAM), created by the Canadian Sport Tourism Alliance (CSTA), estimates the 2015 World Dragon Boat Racing Championships to generate $30 million in economic benefit to the region.
The visiting dragon boat crews will have ample free time in the evenings, half days, and off-days to enjoy the many attractions Niagara has to offer, pre, during, and post event. While in Niagara, each participant will have at least two afternoons and one day free from racing, providing opportunities to explore all that Niagara has to offer.
