When can I begin volunteering?
You can begin volunteering as early as June 2015. The Official Test Event for Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 is the 2015 Canadian Dragon Boat Championships, taking place at the Welland International Flatwater Centre, June 26-28, 2015. Where is Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 taking place?
Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 is being hosted at the Welland International Flatwater Centre (WIFC) North Course located at 16 Townline Tunnel Road, Welland, Ontario, L3C 2T4. For directions, click here.
What is the volunteer stipend program?
As part of the Welland International Flatwater Centre legacy, stipends are awarded to community groups to recognize volunteer contributions. Each individual is able to select which Canadian community organization/not-for-profit group would benefit from their commitment, allowing for community engagement and development. Not-for-profit groups are encouraged to volunteer as a fundraising method.
What is my time commitment for volunteering?
Shifts will be 4-5 hours in length, however, we would love for you to join us for more than one shift. Your time commitment can be anywhere from 1 shift that is 4-5 hours in length to volunteering for the entire duration of the event.
How early do volunteer shifts start? How late will shifts run?
Start and end times of shifts are highly dependent upon both the volunteer positon and the individual’s availability. Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 volunteer shifts may begin as early as 7 am and finish as late as 6 pm.
Is there a deadline to apply for a volunteer position?
The volunteer application deadline, to complete and submit your application, is June 12, 2015.

Visit the Welland Recreational Canal Corporation Community Office located in the Seaway Mall, across from SportChek, for assistance in completing your application. One of our staff or volunteers will be more than happy to assist you with completing your application or answer any of your questions.
How do I know if my application was successful?
All applicants will be notified of their application status via email within 21 business days of their application submission. Once approved and assigned to a specific area, a member of the Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 Volunteer Team will contact you to discuss details of scheduling and volunteer position.
Am I guaranteed a volunteer position?
Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 Volunteer Team strives to ensure all interested applicants have the opportunity to volunteer this summer and aims to place all volunteers into one of their top three areas of preference. Yes, it is possible to request shifts with someone you know, however, it is not guaranteed that these requests will be able to be fulfilled. Any requests to be scheduled with other people can be sent by clicking here to contact the Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 Volunteer Team.
Can I edit or withdraw my application?
Yes, you can edit or withdraw your application at any time. Please click here to contact the Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 Volunteer Team to advise of any edits you wish to make to your application, or if you wish to withdraw your application completely.
Will my personal information be used for any purpose outside of Dragon Boat Niagara 2015?
No, none of your personal information will be distributed or used by anyone outside of the Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 Organizing Committee.
What types of roles are available to volunteers?
Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 will require up to 350+ volunteers to fill various positions. Volunteers will be required both by the water assisting in the race and training day requirements and with athlete services and event logistics. Will there be any training / orientation sessions involved prior to the Dragon Niagara 2015?
Yes, Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 will host a volunteer orientation session prior to the event, at which volunteers will receive their uniforms, accreditations, and event specific details directly related to volunteering. Each volunteer is required to attend one of the two sessions, tentatively scheduled to take place on Wednesday, August 5 and Sunday, August 9; time and location to be confirmed.
If you are unable to attend either of the volunteer orientation sessions due to extenuating circumstances, you are still able to volunteer. The Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 Volunteer Team welcomes those outside of the Niagara Region and Canada to be a part of our team. For those volunteers unable to attend either orientation session, general event information will be sent to you via email. All volunteers will receive event specific training with their designated coordinator throughout the training days.
Will there be food provided to volunteers?
Volunteer meals will be available at the Venue with snacks and beverages available throughout the day. Lunch will be provided to all volunteers working over a meal period and working a minimum six hour shift.
What are the uniform requirements to volunteer?
All volunteers will be provided an event specific uniform. This distinctive clothing is to be worn during volunteer working hours. Each individual is to provide his/her own black, grey, brown or navy pants/shorts. Jeans are not permitted during training or competition days, however, jeans may be worn during set-up and tear-down.
How much parking is available for volunteers? How much will it cost to park at the venue?
Parking will be available on site with no cost for volunteers. Parking details and location will be provided at the volunteer orientation session.
Do you require bilingual volunteers?
Yes, Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 will require bilingual volunteers, however, this will not be required for all volunteer positions. The event is expecting approximately 20+ countries and as such, we will require volunteers fluent in a variety of languages. Please indicate on the online application form languages you are fluent in.
Do I get to choose my volunteer position?
You do not get to choose your volunteer position, however, you can submit your top three preferences of volunteer positions. Every effort will be made to place volunteer applicants in one of their preferred volunteer positions.
What is the minimum age to be a volunteer?
Volunteers must be a minimum of 15 years of age at the time of application, with the exception of medal bearers. Other roles may allow for volunteers under 15 years of age at the discretion of the Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 Organizing Committee. If I make a purchase/expense for Dragon Boat Niagara 2015, will I be reimbursed?
All purchases/expenses by volunteers must be approved by Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 Management prior to the purchase. Only approved expenses with original receipts will be reimbursed.
I am a volunteer from out of town. Will I be reimbursed for any purchases/expenses?
Unfortunately, Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 is unable to reimburse the expenses for out of town volunteers. This includes accommodations, meals, and mileage.
Is it possible to volunteer even if I do not live in Canada?
Yes, even if you do not live in Canada you can volunteer for Dragon Boat Niagara 2015. Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 will be unable to reimburse any expenses for out of town volunteers. This includes accommodations, meals, and transportation.
How will I be contacted about my volunteer shifts?
Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 will primary communicate to volunteers via email. Regularly check your email for any new information and volunteer newsletters to keep you up-to-date.
Will I receive any rewards or benefits by volunteering with Dragon Boat Niagara 2015?
A Volunteer Reward System has been created to reward individuals according to their time commitment to Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 from August 13-23, 2015. What if I am unable to make it to my scheduled volunteer shift?
All efforts will be made to ensure that volunteer shifts will fit in the volunteer’s schedule, however, if a situation arises where you cannot make it to your scheduled shift, contact the Dragon Boat Niagara 2015 Volunteer Team by clicking here. A phone number will be provided at the volunteer orientation session for volunteers to contact throughout Dragon Boat Niagara 2015.
If I have no experience with Dragon Boating, can I still volunteer?
Yes, no prior dragon boat experience is required to volunteer with Dragon Boat Niagara 2015. Any prior exposure or experience to dragon boating is an asset.
